PMMA

PMMA stands for polymethyl methacrylate and is a crystal-clear thermoplastic. The material is sometimes called acrylic, but is also commonly known as “plexiglass”.

PMMA is characterised by properties such as high chemical resistance and rigidity. It has very good scratch resistance and excellent weather and UV resistance.

PMMA is often used as a substitute for glass and is transparent by nature. It can, however, be coloured by adding various additives such as colour masterbatches. Its high light transmission makes it very well suited for optical purposes.

Thanks to its hard surface and excellent weather resistance, PMMA is often used in outdoor applications such as vehicle tail lights and various construction applications. PMMA is also suitable for products such as windows, signs, ice hockey rinks, sunshields and contact lenses.

  • Easy to colour
  • Good electrical properties
  • High resistance to alkaline solutions and oils
  • More brittle than polycarbonate
  • Glass transition temperature at 105 °C
  • Can be bent up to 120 °C
  • Some less good properties:
  • Relatively low heat resistance (should not be used above 55 °C)
  • Poor resistance to acids and alcohols
  • Very brittle material
  • Sensitive to crack formation
