Today there are many reasons to use the modern engineering material plastic rather than metal. Decreased weight and increased design freedom are two of the main reasons, but plastic also has other beneficial properties
that metal lacks. We at Erteco have the necessary knowledge and experience to be able to convert metal components into plastic ones, which entails differences in construction methods and design, among other things.
Many metals, such as die-cast brass, zinc, and aluminum, can often be replaced with plastic, with excellent results. Plastic composites have properties that metals do not. One of the other advantages of using plastic is that components arrive from the production line in the desired color, and do not need to be coated. Other secondary operations such as deburring, threading, and drilling and boring can be skipped, which means cost savings. With metal replacement you save time, money, and work – without compromising on quality. Plastic can be used as metal replacement in many different industries, and metal replacement is a good option even in healthcare and sanitary applications, where the requirements on which materials can be used are very stringent.
As plastic does not require the same high processing temperatures as metal processing, less energy is consumed during production of components. Plastic components also weigh much less than metal components, and so when large volumes are being transported this results in decreased environmental impact and savings on freight costs. In addition, many of the plastics used in metal replacement are recyclable.
Our technical department, the Erteco Tech Center, has extensive experience of metal replacement, construction, material selection, and technical support.
We have the technical equipment and competence required to carry out FEM calculations and mold-filling simulations and provide assistance during trial runs. We work with industry-standard software and are able to assist with three-dimensional product inspections. The projects that we work on are carried out in close collaboration with our clients’ engineering departments, injection molders, tool makers, and end users.
Contact the Erteco Tech Center if you are considering metal replacement for one of your products.
